The Baobab Home (BH)

Located on a beautiful farm outside of Bagamoyo, Tanzania, The Baobab Home's mission is to foster a nurturing environment for children and families affected by HIV/AIDS and poverty to thrive. We accomplish this through a range of projects, including a children's home for orphaned and vulnerable children, a primary school, and outreach work with HIV/AIDS patients in the Bagamoyo community.

Steven Tito Academy (STA)

Established in 2012, STA provides poor but bright children with a quality English-medium education which would otherwise never be available to them. We provide a safe learning environment that supports and encourages students to reach their full potential.

Position

We’re seeking a bright and enthusiastic individual seeking to gain experience in the field of marketing through the lens of an international, grassroots charity. As a confident communicator, you will use your creativity to develop a marketing plan and participate in fundraising activities in order to raise awareness, generate funds and communicate with our supporters around the world. You will be a valuable member of a small and very dynamic international team, and have the incredible opportunity to create sustainable impact for those in need. 

Responsibilities

  • Update and maintain the BH and STA websites and STA blog
  • Develop and maintain BH and STA’s presence on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
  • Maintain and grow BH and STA’s photo/video library on Google Photos
  • Monitor and analyze social media analytics and website Google Analytics
  • Set up and manage Google Ads campaigns
  • Plan and run paid advertising campaigns as needed
  • Research and write grant applications
  • Create fundraising and communications materials
  • Write and distribute STA term newsletters
  • Manage and run STA’s end-of-year sponsorship appeal
  • Help to accurately maintain the donor database on NationBuilder
  • Manage email marketing to donors and supporters
  • Work with ambassadors and former volunteers to grow the BH/STA network
  • With the Donor Relations Manager and Administrative Assistant, maintain communication between sponsors and their sponsored student, including ensuring sponsor letters are sent twice a year
  • With the Executive Director, recruit qualified international volunteers

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Fluent or native English speaker
  • Good research and internet skills
  • Good administrative and computer skills (G Suite, Microsoft Office, etc.)
  • Creativity and ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills, written, verbal and interpersonal
  • Self-motivated (you will be given guidance, but expect to jump in and take initiative)
  • Willingness to explore a new culture and translate that experience for an international audience
  • Willingness to learn basic Swahili

Preferred but not required:

  • Previous marketing, fundraising or events experience
  • Experience using a content management system (Nationbuilder)
  • Camera and photography skills
  • Experience with graphic design (Adobe Photoshop, Canva, etc.)
  • Interest and/or experience in international development, particularly Africa

Remuneration

This is a voluntary position and is unpaid. Volunteers must provide their own travel expenses, including visa fees. Baobab will provide some meals and basic accommodation on-site.

Duration

We prefer a commitment of 6 months and you will be asked to work 5 days per week, 6 hours per day. From past experiences we have found that a 6 month commitment is the minimum period of time to ensure that the post is beneficial to both the volunteer and the organization.
